HMS Swiftsure (1903)

Mauretania and HMS Swiftsure at Gallipoli | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
My thanks to John Jeremy, author of Cockatoo Island: Sydney's Historic Dockyard for the following information about this photo: The battleship in this photo is also readily identifiable from the two very unusual boat-handling cranes between the funnels. British battleships usually used derricks for this purpose. She is either HMS Swiftsure or HMS Triumph. Both were laid down in 1902, one at Elswick and one at Barrow, for the Chilean Navy. They were bought by Britain in December 1903 to prevent any possibility of their purchase by Russia and completed for the Royal Navy in June 1904. During WWI, Swiftsure was transferred from the East Indies Station to the Mediterranean and joined the Dardanelles Squadron in February 1915. She survived the war and was scrapped in 1920. HMS Triumph was transferred to the Dardanelles Squadron from the Far East in January 1915. She was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U21 off Gaba Tepe on 25 May 1915. The liner is the final clue. I think she is Mauretania - which would fit. Mauretania and Lusitania were requisitioned by the Admiralty on the outbreak of war for possible use as armed merchant cruisers. Too big and too fuel consumptive for that task, Lusitania returned to trans Atlantic service until she was sunk on 7 May 1915. Mauretania was laid up until then when she was first intended to replace Lusitania but instead was rapidly converted to carry troops to the eastern Mediterranean. She carried 10,000 troops to Lemnos during the Gallipoli campaign. She probably arrived in the area for the first time in June 1915. Aquitania and Britannic also served as troopships in the area in 1915, but they were bigger ships and I am fairly confident the ship in the photo is Mauretania. In that case, the battleship would have to be HMS Swiftsure.

Funnell's Wood » Victor Ernest Funnell, went down with HMS Triumph – 25th May 1915
Victor Ernest Funnell, born in 1892 in Hove, was the fourth of James Funnell and Naomi Packham of Chalvington’s eight children. The couple moved successively from their tiny rural Sussex village to Eastbourne, then to Bexhill and to Hove, all seaside towns experiencing an economic boom, the latter in the wake of Brighton, before rejoining Southwick in the suburbs of London.

Front Free Endpaper: Joseph Hannaford Bennett - Leonard Smithers
A little while ago now I was contacted by a charming gentleman who was engaged in research into the life of his uncle Joseph Hannaford Bennett (publisher, writer, translator, editor, man of letters), and as the said Joseph was a friend of Leonard Smithers and other 90s luminaries, he wondered if I might be able to add anything to his knowledge of his uncle. I was fairly hopeless but I have assured my corresponent that the folks who visit here are a very widely read and knowledgable kind of crowd and with his permission I paste below the potted biographical details which he has put together in the hope that there may be someone with something new to tell him - much of the information about Leonard Smithers is towards the end of the piece.

HMS Triumph | G E O R D I E B I K E R
The Empire was built on a strong Navy with a long reach, part of that reach was the construction of a fleet of swift warships. The Northeast of England, centered on Newcastle-upon-Tyne, wor Geordieland, has a Great shipbuilding history.
