Erik Weihenmayer kavrami, Ingilizce dilindeki vikipedi’de kullanilmistir. Orada bu kavramla ilgili söyle denir:

Erik Weihenmayer (born September 23, 1968) is the first blind person to reach the summit of Mount Everest, on May 25, 2001. He also climbed Mount Ararat and completed the Seven Summits in September 2002. He is the author of Touch the Top of the World: A Blind Man's Journey to Climb Farther Than the Eye can See, his autobiography.
After becoming blind, Weihenmayer rejected canes and learning Braille. He wanted to prove that he could continue just as he did beforehand. He tried ball games, but eventually gave in to his disability, so he learned to wrestle. In high school he won the National Junior Freestyle Wrestling Championship in Iowa. He started using a guide dog afterward. Then he attended Boston College and graduated as an English major. He became a middle-school teacher and wrestling coach.
With Sabriye Tenberken he climbed with teenagers from the school for the blind. A documentary film based on the project, Blindsight, was released in 2006. Another documentary, Fellowship of the Andes, was produced by Dutch filmmaker Bernd Out, and gives the account of Weihenmayer accompanying a team of blind and visually impaired students on a mountain trek across the Andes in June 2006. In 2011, he competed on ABC's Expedition Impossible.

Erik Weihenmayer. 7.612 beğenme · 391 kişi bunun hakkında konuşuyor. Despite going blind at age 13, I've had the privilege of living an adventurous life. On May 25, 2001, I became the only blind person in history to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain, Mt. Everest. At age 39, I reached the top of Carstensz Pyramid, the tallest peak in Austral-Asia, completing my quest to climb all of the Seven Summits – the highest peaks on each of the seven continents. An article in Time Magazine said, "There is no way to put what Erik has done in perspective because no one has ever done anything like it. It is a unique achievement, one that in the truest sense pushes the limits of what man is capable of." What this quote doesn’t mention is the immense belief and loyalty of many climbing partners who have helped me fulfill my dreams. Before I climbed Mt. Everest, many Himalayan climbing veterans said I was going to endanger my team and cause an “epic.” Instead, we had one of the most successful Everest expeditions in history. Nineteen out of 21 of us stood on top, a world record: the most people from one team to reach the summit in a single day. Our Mt. Everest climb was sponsored by the National Federation of the Blind. Essentially, this translated to 50,000 blind people organizing car washes and bake sales to get me to the top of Mt. Everest. So when standing on a summit, I always feel like I am on the shoulders of great friends and supporters. Additionally, I have scaled El Capitan, a 3300-foot overhanging rock wall in Yosemite; and Losar, a 3000-foot ice waterfall in The Himalayas. In September 2003, I completed Primal Quest, one of the toughest multi-sport races in the world – 9 days, 460 miles, 60,000 feet of elevation gain, no time outs. In fall, 2004, I, along with my Everest teammates, led a group of blind Tibetan teenagers to 21,000 ft. on the north face of Mt. Everest as an educational outreach project to carve out opportunities for young people around the globe, no matter what their challenges. This expedition was documented in the film, Blindsight, which won the Peoples Choice award at some of the top film festivals in the world. After returning from Tibet, I partnered with a nonprofit organization, Global Explorers, to found Leading the Way. This is a program which combines blind and sighted students teaming up to complete challenging international adventures. So far, we have trekked the Inca Trail in Peru, rafted the Grand Canyon, and hiked the Mexican volcanoes. More recently, my Everest teammates and I created a program called Soldiers To Summits, which helps wounded warriors overcome their disabilities and become successful in civilian life. Our ascent of Lobuche, a 20,000 foot peak in Nepal, was the the subject of the award-winning film, High Ground. I make a life as an athlete with sponsorships from outdoor companies like Mountain Hardwear. I am also a speaker, a career which has taken me around the world, from Hong Kong to Geneva, from the 2005 APEC Summit in Chile to the 2009 Presidential Inaugural celebration in Washington DC., I have shared speaking platforms with Secretary Colin Powel, Vice President Al Gore, Henry Kissinger, Prime Minister Tony Blair, and authors Tom Peters and Stephen Covey. I speak to audiences on harnessing the power of adversity, the importance of a "rope team," and the daily struggle to pursue your dreams.
